Google Pay Introduces Option to Make Small Payments Without UPI PIN
Google Pay has recently introduced UPI LITE on its platform in order to simplify small digital transactions.
UPI Lite allows users to recharge up to ₹4,000 per day for instant transactions capped at ₹200 at a time, the search engine giant said.
Designed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), it enables small transactions without entering a UPI PIN.
According to the company, UPI LITE accounts are linked to users’ bank accounts but are not dependent on the real-time issuing bank’s core banking system, resulting in higher payment success rates even during peak hours and a less cluttered bank book.
Users can activate the feature by logging into their Google Pay app and going to their profile page, after which they need to tap on ‘activate UPI LITE’.
Google joins the likes of BHIM, Paytm and PhonePe and 15 banks including HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Punjab National Bank to launch the service on its platform, according to the NPCI website.
Ambarish Kenghe, head of product management at Google, said that unique offerings and use cases are key factors in driving the adoption of digital payments in the country.
“With the introduction of UPI LITE, we aim to simplify low-value transactions by helping users have a convenient, compact and super-fast payment experience,” Kenghe said.
Reserve Bank of India introduced the feature in September 2022.
