Google is set to launch a new feature on the Pixel phone app that can identify unknown callers.
Google Pixel users may soon have a solution to the problem of missed calls from unknown numbers. Google is said to be developing a new tool called “Lookup” for its Phone app, which will allow users to identify unfamiliar callers before returning their calls.
Currently, services like Truecaller offer similar features, but Google wants to integrate this feature directly into its phone app. Spotted by a tip called AssembleDebug (via PiunikaWeb), the tool was initially only available to Pixel users in Japan. However, it is now being tested in beta version 127.0.620688474 of the Google Phone app.
this is how it works
When a user receives a call from an unknown number, they can tap it in the Recent Calls tab. This will bring up a drop down menu with the option to use the Lookup feature. By selecting this, users can search for a number online using various apps installed on the phone, including Google Search.
While Lookup can provide useful information about the caller, it is important to note that it is based on web searches and may not always provide detailed results. Therefore, it may not completely replace dedicated caller ID apps like Truecaller. However, it can still be a useful tool for identifying potential scams or nuisance callers.
Scammers are becoming more sophisticated, using tactics such as AI-generated voices or cloning legitimate business numbers. Therefore, it is important to stay alert and verify suspicious calls with trusted sources.
As for when the Lookup feature will be available for Pixel users outside of Japan, it remains uncertain. However, since the feature is already in beta testing, it could potentially be included in the next Pixel Feature Drop, which is expected in June.
In the meantime, users can check out other upcoming Android 15 features and keep an eye out for new Google Pixel devices, including the Google Pixel Fold 2, Google Pixel 8a, Google Pixel 9, and Google Pixel 9 Pro.
