Gurugram Jewellery Store Owner Falls Victim to Rs 2 Lakh Online Payment Scam
The prevalence of online scams in India is increasing, resulting in the unfortunate financial loss for numerous individuals. A recent case involved a jewellery store owner who fell victim to a scammer’s deceitful act, as the fraudster provided a counterfeit payment screenshot to acquire gold coins.
According to a PTI report, a jewelery shop in Gurugram was robbed of Rs 2 lakh after an unidentified person cheated the owner. The fraudster visited the store and pretended to be interested in buying gold coins worth that amount.
The owner of the jewelry store, trusting the scammer, decided to proceed with the online store instead of paying in person. Unfortunately, she shared her husband’s bank details and the scammer provided a fake screenshot to trick her into believing the payment was confirmed.
The owner believed that the payment had been made and allowed him to leave. Unfortunately, he later found that the money had not been credited to his account and he has fallen victim to a fraudulent scheme, PTI reported.
The fraudster sent a fake screenshot on WhatsApp to the owner of the jewelry store, falsely claiming that the payment was successful. However, after further investigation, it became clear that no transaction had actually taken place.
Anuradha, the owner of the jewelery shop, immediately took action after noticing the missing payment. She filed a complaint with the police and explained how the scammer took advantage of her vulnerable situation while her husband was hospitalized and had to carry out remote transactions.
“My husband Mukesh Kumar was in the hospital at that time. I shared his bank account details and the person sent me a screenshot on my WhatsApp and said the payment was successful. When I contacted the gentleman for the payment, he requested my presence first in Mewat and later in Nehru Place, Delhi. Unfortunately, however, he did not fulfill his financial obligation . I finally resorted to seeking help from the police authorities,” he said.
