India has no plans to regulate AI growth: IT Ministry
The government is not considering bringing in a law or regulating the growth of artificial intelligence (AI) in the country as generative AI-based chatbots are a rage across the industry.
In its reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) said it sees AI as a significant and strategic area for the country and the technology sector.
“AI has a kinetic impact on the growth of entrepreneurship and business, and the government is taking all necessary steps in policies and infrastructure to develop a robust AI sector in the country,” the ministry said.
In June 2018, the government published a national strategy for artificial intelligence and proposes the development of an ecosystem for the research and implementation of artificial intelligence.
MeitY said it has established a center of excellence for various new technologies, including artificial intelligence, to explore opportunities in these specialized fields.
“These hubs provide start-ups with state-of-the-art plug-and-play co-working spaces and access to the ecosystem,” it added in its response.
India is also a founding member of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI).
In an earlier interview with IANS, Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar had said that the government’s aim is to make India a global AI powerhouse that will not stop at just integrating foreign chatbots, but build a new generation of AI-based. innovation for billions of citizens.
“Artificial intelligence will certainly change the digital economy and grow the business economy in the country. AI is the ‘kinetic enabler’ of the digital economy and we want to be the global leader in AI,” the minister told IANS.
