In May, the number of 5G smartphone shipments in India surpassed 100 million, setting a new record as the country’s rapid 5G deployment continues.
According to data shared with IANS by market intelligence firm CyberMedia Research (CMR), 5G smartphone shipments have increased more than 28 times since its introduction.
“In May, 5G shipments represented 48% of the smartphone market, with Samsung leading the 5G market, closely followed by OnePlus and Vivo.
Together, the three brands had a combined 5G market share of 60 percent, Shipra Sinha, analyst at CMR’s Industry Intelligence Group, told IANS.
With 5G rollout now reaching most regions in India, the 5G smartphone market is expected to grow by over 70 percent (y-o-y) by the end of this year.
5G shipments in the Indian smartphone market grew by 28 percent since 2020, when it was introduced.
In 2022, nearly 100 5G smartphones were introduced to the Indian market.
According to an earlier CMR study, the key to mass adoption of 5G in India depends on, among other things, the adoption of 5G smartphones in the affordable segment (under Rs 10,000).
Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel started rolling out their 5G networks in October 2022 and have covered most of the country.
