Jack Dorsey Jabs at Mark Zuckerberg Over ‘Follow’ Request on Threads
Threads, the latest social media app developed by Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta Platforms, has emerged as a strong rival to Elon Musk’s Twitter, garnering over 150 million downloads. Similar to Twitter, Threads allows users to share text, links, and engage with others. Interestingly, it has come to light that Jack Dorsey, the co-founder and former CEO of Twitter, has joined Threads and subsequently received a ‘follow’ request from Zuckerberg. However, Dorsey opted to take a playful jab at the Meta chief instead!
Dorsey shared a screenshot on Twitter showing Zuckerberg’s follow-up request. He captioned the message, “Too soon, b.”
Interestingly, despite beating Threads, Dorsey has created an account on the platform. When Threads was launched globally on July 5, Dorsey criticized the new app, calling it one of many “clones” trying to copy Twitter. In one of his tweets, he said: “We wanted flying cars, instead we got 7 Twitter clones.”
Threads has posed a significant challenge to Twitter, which has struggled since Elon Musk took it private. However, Dorsey continues to criticize Threads for mimicking his brainchild, Twitter. He once tweeted, “All your threads belong to us [sic],” along with a screenshot from his iPhone, showing that the Threads app requires at least 14 permissions.
Meta launched Threads for iOS and Android users in 100 countries. The app is currently available for free on the App Store and does not display ads.
The outcome of the ongoing battle between these two tech giants remains uncertain. Threads has seen significant user growth since its launch earlier this month, attracting celebrities, politicians and other notables to the platform.
Twitter had about 240 million monetizable daily active users in July of last year, according to the company’s most recent disclosure before Musk’s acquisition. However, data from web analytics companies suggests a decline in usage after that. And today Musk has said that Twitter has lost half of its revenue.
While it’s too early to predict, Evercore ISI suggests that Threads could generate significant revenue for the social media giant. Analysts at Evercore ISI estimate that Threads will reach nearly 200 million daily active users and generate about $8 billion in annual revenue over the next two years. Significantly, Insider Intelligence’s note says that Twitter is set to earn less than $3 billion in 2023.
