Meta’s CEO, Zuckerberg, Aims to Compete with Apple’s Vision Pro by Becoming the ‘Android of AR and VR’
Apple, which launches the Vision Pro headphones, has received a surprisingly positive reception from its competitors. Meta has a strong presence in this market thanks to the Quest line-up, and Mark Zuckerberg is excited about Apple’s result as it can re-energize the segment and get more people interested in these devices.
More importantly, Zuckerberg realizes that Apple’s headphones cost $3,499 (roughly Rs. 2.90 lakh), which is nowhere near the affordable price range of the Quest headphones.
The head of Meta hopes that Apple’s launch in this segment will get more people’s attention and also give new life to the stagnant category. In fact, according to reports, Zuckerberg hopes Quest can become the “Android of the AR and VR market,” which is an interesting way to look at Apple’s efforts in the mixed reality segment.
Meta’s Quest lineup and its layers of software are arguably the most polished versions, and the company hopes to be the next best alternative to the Vision Pro, which is quite possible thanks to its $400 (roughly Rs. 32,000) price tag.
Another big change that Meta could make by focusing on this segment is to break away from the metaverse and focus more on mixed reality development, and that’s where the combination of a brand like Apple will help its own business prospects.
It makes sense for Meta to take the Android route in this segment and aim to establish itself as a solid second option for millions, especially those who won’t or can’t spend more than Rs 2.5 lakh on Apple’s Vision Pro headset.
However, Android has a much larger market share than iOS, except in markets like the US, where iPhones are more in demand. For Meta to position itself as an Android-like alternative in the mixed reality (XR) segment, the company needs to evolve its products and cater to audiences in different price ranges, which could give it a definite boost.
