Microsoft adds a new photo gallery to Windows 11’s File Explorer
US tech giant Microsoft has introduced a new feature called “Gallery” to Windows 11, which aims to simplify access to users’ photo collections in File Explorer. According to the company, the content displayed in the gallery is the same as what users can find in the All Photos view of the Photos app.
“We’re introducing Gallery, a new feature in File Explorer designed to make it easier to access your photo collection. The content you see in Gallery is the same as the All Photos view in Photos,” Microsoft said in a blog post.
The feature has been included in the latest Windows Insider Build 23435, which allows users to quickly access the Gallery view through File Explorer’s navigation panel.
Additionally, the company noted that if users have OneDrive Camera Roll Backup installed on their phones, the photos they take will automatically appear at the top of the view.
Users can choose which folders are displayed in the Gallery view via the Collection drop-down menu. They can also add subfolders of existing sources to filter some of their content, such as desktop backgrounds and SD card/camera imports.
However, the feature is currently only available to a few testers and is not yet available to all Dev Channel insiders. Microsoft plans to monitor feedback before releasing it to everyone.
Additionally, Microsoft has announced significant changes to the way Windows controls which apps open certain files by default, and to how users can pin programs to the taskbar or the Start menu on the desktop.
The company is introducing a new deep link “uniform Resource Identifier” (URI) that lets developers send users to the right section of the Settings menu when they want to change the way Windows 11 reacts to certain links and file types.
