Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar has criticized deepfakes, following the circulation of a deepfake video featuring cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar. Chandrasekhar expressed concerns about the safety and trust of Indian users and announced that the government will soon introduce stricter regulations under the IT Act to ensure platform compliance.
In the X issue, Tendulkar mentioned the captured video – where he is seen promoting the gaming app – and expressed his concern about misuse of the technology.
On X, the IT and Electronics Minister thanked Tendulkar for reporting the deepfake video and said, “#DeepFakes and false information generated by #AI are a threat to the security and trust of Indian users and are nuisances and violations of law that platforms must prevent and prevent removal. “.
Chandrasekhar said the IT Ministry’s recent advisory requires platforms to fully comply with this.
“We will soon announce the tightened rules of the IT Act to ensure that the platforms comply with them,” the minister said.
In the fake video, Tendulkar talks about the benefits of the app saying that he didn’t know that making money has become so easy and that his daughter is using the platform.
Tendulkar posted a video and a message expressing his concern over the misuse of technology.
“These videos are fake. It is disturbing to see the rampant misuse of technology. Request everyone to report such videos, ads and apps in large numbers,” Tendulkar wrote in a post to X.
Tendulkar had asked social media platforms to be alert and responsive to complaints.
“Swift action on their part is crucial to stop the spread of misinformation and fakes,” he wrote.
Deepfakes refer to synthetic or engineered media that has been digitally manipulated and altered to provide convincingly misleading information or impersonate someone else using artificial intelligence or artificial intelligence.
Last month, the government had ordered all platforms to comply with IT rules and authorized companies to clearly and precisely inform users about prohibited content.
The government spoke harshly to social media platforms after several “deepfake” videos targeting leading actors, including Rashmika Mandanna, sparked public outrage and raised concerns about the weaponization of technology to create bad content and harmful narratives.
The center has asked platforms to act decisively on deepfakes and adapt their terms of service and community guidelines in line with IT rules and current laws. The government has made it clear that non-compliance will be dealt with strictly and that there will be legal consequences.
