Oracle Invests Heavily in Ampere Chips with $100 Million+

According to Oracle’s proxy statement filed on Friday, the company has agreed to make a prepayment of $104.1 million for processor chips manufactured by Ampere Computing, a startup.

Oracle also invested $400 million in Ampere through a convertible bond in its 2023 fiscal year, the representative said.

Ampere builds custom server chips based on Arm technology that compete with X86-based designs from Intel and Advanced Micro Devices. Oracle has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in Ampere since its inception, according to filings.

The idea behind Ampere’s investment – and its chip acquisitions – is to give Oracle’s cloud an edge over competitors. Amazon.com makes its own server chips that compete with Ampere, and Google makes its own AI processors.

Ampere declined to comment. Oracle did not respond to a request for comment.
