Here’s the reason why Apple will continue utilizing Qualcomm modems for iPhones until 2027.
Apple has decided to extend its agreement with Qualcomm to use its modems in iPhones until 2027. The company had previously signed a 2-year deal that was due to expire in 2025, but the chip giant confirmed the new announcement this week. .
The new agreement means that Apple can use Qualcomm’s modem in iPhone models until March 2027. The news hardly comes as a surprise, as recent developments suggest that Apple’s plans for its internal modem have been delayed by a few years.
Apple originally hoped to introduce a 5G modem in 2024, which was then pushed back to 2025, and expected to release it with the next iPhone SE model, but even those plans now look unrealistic. Some of you may remember that Apple bought Intel’s modem chip business a few years ago, which was supposed to be the platform on which the company planned to make its own iPhone modem.
However, Apple has had to rewrite the Intel code after problems with its integration, apparently delaying its use in iPhone production. Then it is also important that Apple does not infringe on Qualcomm’s patents to avoid further legal complications.
Apple’s delayed modem plans will keep Qualcomm happy for a few more years, even if it understands the consequences of losing the iPhone maker when the modem materializes. Apple has made big transitions with silicon over the years, and done so successfully. We’ve had A-series chips powering iPhones and iPads for years.
The company then decided to part ways with Intel and produce its own M-series silicon, which has completely renewed the Mac and iMac range. Apple’s tight control over the hardware has ensured that performance never disappoints, but the company will only do that with the iPhone modem when it’s completely satisfied with its results.
