Samsung unveils the world’s inaugural transparent MicroLED screen at CES 2024.
During its First Look event at CES, Samsung has unveiled a groundbreaking innovation – the world’s first transparent MicroLED display, adding to the list of surprises at the event.
While there’s still no word on how much it will cost or when this technology will find its way to retail devices, Samsung showed off not one, but three different transparent micro-LED displays with slightly different designs. Two of the demo units featured tinted glass to make it easier to overlook areas behind possible panels, while the other appeared to be as transparent as regular glass, but also featured a bezel-less design.
Personally, it’s hard to describe the effect of Samsung’s transparent micro-OLED displays, as the content almost looks like a hologram when floating in the air. All of the demo units were freestanding and only about a centimeter thick, further adding to the illusion of a floating screen. In addition, due to the high pixel density of the micro-LEDs, the images also looked incredibly sharp. So far, Samsung has only uploaded one vertical video full of EDM, but hopefully it gives you an idea of what we saw:
According to a Samsung representative, transparent MicroLED screens have a higher brightness compared to transparent OLED panels, so they are less affected by ambient light.
The bad news is that Samsung’s current crop of opaque MicroLED TVs currently cost $150,000 for a 110-inch model, so it will be a fair while before these new displays become anywhere near affordable.
