Take-Two Executive Praises $50 Price Tag for ‘Red Dead Redemption’ Re-Release
If you were surprised by the $50 price for the 13-year-old Red Dead Redemption game on Nintendo Switch and PS4, there’s some positive news. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has defended the cost, stating that it is the appropriate price from a commercial standpoint. IGN reports that Zelnick explained his reasoning during the company’s Q2 earnings report, reassuring consumers.
The points of frustration with Red Dead Redemption’s sticker price are wide-ranging, including the lack of a multiplayer option and the complete lack of a quality upgrade since its 2010 release (no 4K visuals in sight). Also, the small matter is that the game is already available for Xbox Series X in 4K version for $40.
Take-Two is banking on the fact that Undead Nightmare, the Red Dead Redemption expansion, will be included in the port as justification for the higher price. Zelnick called Undead Nightmare “a good stand-alone game in its own right when it was originally released, so we feel like it’s a great first-time package and certainly a great value for consumers.”
If the CEO’s words have convinced you to shell out $50 for Red Dead Redemption, you can pick up the digital version for Nintendo Switch or PS4 starting August 17th. The physical version will be released on the 13th. October
