TikTok aims to compete with Instagram by launching its own photo sharing service
TikTok and Instagram can renew their competition in a new avatar. As we all know, Instagram has moved from photos to videos because it wanted to compete with TikTok in the short video space, and Reels have proven to be a success. But now TikTok plans to go the other way and is reportedly working on its own photo-sharing app.
It’s interesting to hear TikTok eyeing the photo segment, and its intent might make a lot of sense now that other so-called photo apps have shifted focus to other features.
TikTok Photos, as seen in the code of the latest TikTok app, suggests that the platform is aware of the concerns raised by the US government and is also looking to move away from the previous backlash. According to the report, TikTok Photos aims to reach like-minded users who want to see the photo posts Instagram was known for before it decided videos were the future.
TikTok’s line of code suggests that TikTok Photos will be launched soon, without giving an actual timeline for its release. But even if TikTok Photos does come out, we’re not sure how widely the platform can launch the app, as markets like India have been out of reach for the company since the early 2020s.
Either way, Instagram has clearly left a big void that needs filling, and if TikTok manages to hit the right chord with TikTok Photos, it might actually prove that photos aren’t dead and can co-exist with videos.
