UCC Professor Predicts Possible Impact of 1640-Foot Asteroid on Earth – Find Out When
Asteroids, which are large space rocks, occasionally come close to Earth, causing concern. NASA monitors these asteroids and classifies them as potentially dangerous or harmless based on their size and proximity to our planet. A recent study suggests that there is a possibility of an asteroid colliding with Earth within the next 159 years. This news is particularly alarming when considering that an asteroid was responsible for the extinction of dinosaurs 65 million years ago. The prospect of an asteroid collision in the foreseeable future is now quite frightening. Let’s find out what the expert has to say about this potential impact.
An asteroid hits Earth every 159 years
According to an Echo Live report, University College Cork (UCC) Professor of Astrophysics Bertram Bitsch has said that it is possible that an asteroid called Bennu will hit our planet in 159 years, which could cause the end of humanity! Bitsch has added that it may never happen, but there is a one in 2,700 chance that asteroid Bennu could hit Earth.
The “Earth Impact” program at Imperial College London reports that asteroid Bennu is 1,640 feet across, which is massive. It can create a 6 kilometer wide crater and can crush various buildings over a large area. UCC professors also mentioned NASA’s Osiris-Rex spacecraft and its collection of soil from asteroid Bennu and its delivery back to Earth just a few days ago. He said: “We have some idea of the trajectory of the asteroid, but it only involves the probability that it may or may not hit Earth, because we cannot yet calculate the trajectory with any precision because of the unknown gravitational shocks that this asteroid will actually face in the future.”
For now, NASA is studying 250 grams of soil collected from Asterid Bennu. The research could help scientists understand the origin of the universe. Additionally, this would help to better understand asteroids so that the world can create a defense mechanism. Scientists could work to steer the asteroid or they could also develop plans to completely destroy such dangerous asteroids.
