WhatsApp Introduces Anonymous Group Creation Feature

WhatsApp now allows you to create groups without giving them a name. Mark Zuckerberg shared this news on his official Meta channel on Instagram.

Mark announced on his Meta channel that WhatsApp makes it “simpler to create WhatsApp groups by naming them after the people in the chat when you don’t want to come up with another name”.

The meta notes that this new feature will roll out over the next few weeks, and it’s meant to help when you need to form a group quickly and don’t want to think about a name. Right now you have to name a group before you can start chatting.

WhatsApp also wants you to know that while this makes things simpler, your privacy is still important. For this reason, the name of the group may be different for each person, depending on how they have saved the contact information on the phone. And if you’re in a group with people you don’t know or whose numbers aren’t saved, you’ll only see their phone number.

So let’s say you have a special nickname for your friend that only you use. Other people in the group won’t see this name. They will see any name they have saved for that contact.

In related news, WhatsApp also recently announced the ability to send HD images. The new feature allows users to take a photo and send it to their contacts in high quality. The feature was announced last week and is being rolled out gradually. However, the standard photo quality setting is still the default, so you’ll need to select the HD option when uploading photos.
