WhatsApp Introduces Video Messaging Similar to Telegram
WhatsApp is introducing a new feature that allows users to effortlessly share their activities with friends through instant video messages, similar to Telegram. This feature enables users to respond in chat with videos lasting up to one minute, without the need to create a Story or a similar clip. By simply tapping and holding a button, users can capture footage, and they can continue recording hands-free by swiping up.
Videos will automatically play on mute, so you shouldn’t startle anyone until you’re ready to tap to unmute. Like most things on WhatApp, instant messages are end-to-end encrypted for added privacy. The feature should be available to all users “in the coming weeks,” the company says.
This probably won’t replace Telegram Snapchat for many people. WhatsApp still dominates the messaging space, largely driven by calls and text messages. That being said, the feature can be appreciated if you don’t want to switch apps just to send a quick video. You can quickly share news when a text or voice message won’t cut it, or simply respond to a friend with something more personal than a sticker.
The parent company Metalla is an incentive to act. While WhatsApp has over 2 billion active users last year, Telegram is growing rapidly with an estimated 700 million active users every month. Snapchat continues to grow despite stiff competition from other social platforms. Apple’s iOS 17 introduces FaceTime video answering for iPhone users as well. While instant video messages may not convince users to sign up, they may prevent WhatsApp fans from drifting towards the competition.
