WhatsApp Update: Over 45,000,000 Indian Accounts Banned in February 2023 – Here’s Why
Popular instant messaging app WhatsApp, owned by Metap, recently announced that the company banned over 45 lakh bad accounts in India in February under the new IT rules 2021.
Between February 1 and February 28, “4,597,400 WhatsApp accounts were banned and 1,298,000 of these accounts were proactively blocked before users reported it,” WhatsApp said in its monthly compliance report.
The popular instant messaging platform, which has nearly 500 million users in the country, again received a record 2,804 complaint reports in the country in February, with 504 “actions”.
“This user security report includes information on user complaints received and corresponding actions by WhatsApp, as well as WhatsApp’s own preventive measures to combat abuse on our platform. We will continue to be transparent about our work and include information about our efforts in future reports,” said a company spokesperson.
Other social media platforms, including Twitter, on Friday banned a record 682,420 accounts promoting child sexual abuse and non-consensual nudity in India between January 26 and February 25. The microblogging platform run by Elon Musk also closed 1,548 accounts for promoting terrorism on its platform. on the ground.
In its monthly report under the new IT rules 2021, Twitter said it received only 73 complaints from users in India during the same period through its complaint handling mechanisms. In addition, Twitter handled 27 complaints complaining about account suspensions.

Under the new IT Rules 2021, large digital and social media platforms with more than 5 million users must publish monthly compliance reports.
Meanwhile, Electronics and IT Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar recently launched a Grievance Committee (GAC) to look into their concerns regarding content and other issues.
