Xiaomi May Transition to MiOS Platform For Mobile Devices From MIUI
According to reports, Xiaomi may discontinue the MIUI version in the coming years and move to a new platform called MiOS. The name is eerily similar to Apple’s iOS and macOS names, and it looks like Xiaomi is ready to take its Apple inspiration to a whole new level.
The details of MiOS are still unclear, but the fact that Xiaomi plans to change the name of the popular mobile platform suggests that the company is planning years ahead. An interesting aspect of the MiOS rumors is that Xiaomi will likely no longer offer Android in its own skin, but will likely run on a completely new platform for mobile devices, similar to Huawei’s approach.
Xiaomi could develop this OS using the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), which should get people excited about the company’s plans in the software arena, something we’ve been hearing about for a while now. Xiaomi has already trademarked MiOS and the mios.cn domain in its home market of China.
The company has a two-pronged strategy with the mobile platform because it serves consumers in China differently than in India and parts of Europe. For all we know, Xiaomi could restrict access to MiOS for Chinese users, like Vivo used Origin OS in the Chinese market for a few years, while offering Funtouch OS in countries like India.
Xiaomi also knows it doesn’t need Google’s apps in China to work, which could also work with a completely new mobile OS, and Huawei has shown it can be done. Xiaomi hasn’t officially talked about MiOS, and it’s unlikely we’ll hear anything about the new platform right now. However, the company is expected to release the Xiaomi 14 series by the end of this year, and it is possible that MiOS will be announced at the event.
