Listen Up! YouTube Launches Feature That Identifies Songs Just by Humming
YouTube is experimenting with an exciting feature for Android phones. Have you ever experienced having a tune stuck in your mind, but you’re unsure of its title? Well, YouTube is currently trialing a method that allows you to discover that song by humming, singing, or simply recording a snippet of it.
How does it work
If you’re one of the lucky ones who gets to try this feature, you can switch from the standard voice search to this new song search option in the YouTube app. Then you just hum, sing or record part of the song for at least three seconds. YouTube’s smart technology figures out which song it is and shows you videos of that song on YouTube. You may see the official music video or others’ videos featuring that song.
Currently, in the testing phase, only a few Android users can try it. But if it works well, they might let everyone use it. This can be very useful as many people search YouTube for songs they like.
This idea may sound familiar to some of you. In 2020, Google (which is YouTube’s parent company) did something similar. They made it so you can find songs by humming, whistling, or singing in the Google app, Google Search widget, or Google Assistant. But there’s a slight difference: Google might ask you to hum a bit longer, say 10-15 seconds, to find a song.
Both YouTube and Google use intelligent computer technology to do this. They listen to your hum or song and match it with the specific melody of the song. So it’s kind of magic.
YouTube’s AI Adventures
However, YouTube is not just about music. They also use fancy computers to make video summaries using artificial intelligence. These summaries give you a quick peek at what the video is about, so you can decide if you want to watch it. But don’t worry, they don’t replace the information of the video creators. It’s just an added feature.
YouTube is constantly developing new things to improve your user experience. With this new song search and other cool tricks, they make sure you have fun using their app.
