NASA Launches Mission to Investigate Asteroid Psyche in the Asteroid Belt
NASA is persistently engaged in exploring the vastness of the universe, and their upcoming mission, Psyche, slated for launch in October 2023, aims to reveal unprecedented insights into a metallic asteroid. This ambitious undertaking will employ state-of-the-art technology, including exceptionally sensitive cameras. Following closely behind the triumphant DART mission, where NASA intentionally collided a spacecraft with an asteroid to alter its trajectory, the asteroid Psyche venture is poised to make significant strides in scientific discovery.
Psyche Mission
Operation Psyche is led by Arizona State University. Psyche’s primary mission is to study a fascinating celestial body known as Asteroid Psyche, an M-class asteroid located in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Psyche has the potential to provide crucial insights into the formation of our solar system. According to NASA, it is the 16th asteroid discovered in the 19th century.
At the heart of this mission are the Psyche multispectral imagers. These are a pair of identical cameras equipped with filters and telescopic lenses. These cameras are designed to photograph the asteroid’s surface with different wavelengths of light, allowing scientists to build a digital terrain model of Psyche. This model not only reveals the features of the asteroid’s surface, but also sheds light on its geochemistry and composition.
Explaining the Psyche mission, planetary scientist and mission co-principal Jim Bell of Arizona State University said: “We’re also taking images further into the infrared, where the sensors are still sensitive and where we can get a little bit more information about the rock types and minerals on the surface.”
In addition to their scientific role, cameras are also used for navigation. The instruments for the Psyche mission will be built by Malin Space Science Systems, a company known for building instruments used on previous space missions, including to Mars and the Moon.
