Is Spotify going to launch a Hi-Fi service? Here’s what the Company says

Spotify continues to grow as a platform in the music streaming segment, with millions already paying for its service. But the company has yet to deliver on its promise to launch a Hi-Fi version of its streaming tier, which was supposed to be available long before Apple and Amazon entered the space.

Several company delays and radio silence on the matter suggested to many that Spotify has given up on launching the Hi-Fi service, but this week the company has shared a positive update with its subscribers.

Spotify’s co-CEO Gustav Söderström has made it clear that the Hi-Fi streaming service will start and is not dead for the company. Söderström was quoted in an interview with The Verge this week as implying that the company’s lossless music tier will be launched, but he didn’t give a timetable for its availability.

As you may recall, the platform confirmed Spotify HiFi long before Apple and Amazon were going to release their offerings. And there was a lot of excitement among users about the technology coming to the leading music streaming app. But several delays and a lack of proper communication seem to have killed all the hype about HiFi so far.

It’s also interesting that both Apple and Amazon managed to offer their own version of HiFi music streaming at no extra cost.

Spotify talked about charging extra to provide HiFi streaming quality. Söderström is asked the reasons for postponing its release and was also asked if the license terms and pricing have become a problem in releasing the service. “The industry changed and we had to adapt,” he adds.

And then suggested that the HiFi service has to work for Spotify “also from a cost perspective”. It is obvious that Apple’s launch without additional payment has made Spotify’s plan to launch its service.

We came across leaked details of the Spotify HiFi plan, which was priced at $19.99 (roughly Rs. 1,600) per month and had a lot of new features that the platform felt deserved a higher price tag. Meanwhile, Apple bundled its Classic Music service for existing Apple Music users, making it harder for Spotify to charge a premium for lossless music.
