Consumer electronics giants LG and Samsung have unveiled transparent TVs at trade shows, and LG just announced that its OLED-powered display will go on sale later this year.
Almost invisible when turned off, LG’s 77-inch transparent OLED display can switch between transparent mode and a more traditional black background in standard TV mode.
“The uniqueness of OLED is that it is an organic material that can be printed on any surface,” explains David Park of LG’s home entertainment division.
“So we’ve printed it on a transparent piece of glass, and then to achieve OLED image quality, we have a contrast film that runs up and down.”
The content is delivered wirelessly to the screen using LG’s Zero Connect Box, which transmits 4K image and sound.

General Mills, Del Monte Foods and Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream are among the companies advertising in carts during the upcoming pilot at West Coast stores owned by Good Food Holdings.
Instacart says the display might promote deals or show a limited-edition treat like Chocolate Strawberry Cheerios. It can also deliver real-time recommendations based on what customers put in the shopping cart, such as promoting ice cream if a customer buys corn on the cob.
Instacart entered the cart business in 2021 when it acquired Caper, which makes smart carts equipped with cameras and sensors that automatically track items placed in them. Instacart expects to have thousands of Caper Carts in use by the end of this year.
