Mumbai Police Warns Android Users of Increase in WhatsApp Pink Scam
The Mumbai Police has issued a red alert for Android users who have installed WhatsApp in Pink. In a Twitter announcement, the Mumbai Police warned Android users about the potential risks associated with WhatsApp Pink and provided a picture illustrating the consequences, as well as precautionary measures to safeguard against this scam.
“News about the New Pink Look WhatsApp app with advanced features recently circulating among WhatsApp users is a scam that can lead to hacking of your mobile phone via malware,” the image reads.
“It is not uncommon for fraudsters to come up with various new tricks and ways to lure gullible users to fall into the trap to commit online fraud. Users need to be aware, vigilant and alert to such frauds and stay safe in the digital world.”
Downloading WhatsApp in pink can lead to misuse of phone numbers and photos stored in mobile phones, financial losses, misuse of credentials, spam messages and more.
People are advised to immediately remove the fake app downloaded on their mobile phone by going to Settings > Apps > WhatsApp (pink logo) and uninstalling it.
Never click on links from unknown sources without proper verification or authentication. You should also always install apps through the official Google or iOS app store or legitimate website.
Always remember to never share your personal information or financial information such as login details, passwords, credit or debit card information and other similar information online with anyone as it can be misused.
