Spotify to Challenge TikTok, YouTube Music with Launch of Music Videos

According to sources familiar with the matter, Spotify, the well-known music streaming platform, is exploring the idea of incorporating complete music videos into its repertoire. This strategic maneuver is intended to enhance its competitiveness in comparison to YouTube Music, which already provides substantial music video support, as well as to rival the popularity of TikTok, a prominent platform for short-form videos. A report from Bloomberg reveals Spotify’s intention to introduce music videos, a feature that has the potential to greatly enhance its market position.

Currently, Spotify allows artists to upload GIFs with their songs, but this is not enough to provide an immersive experience for full-fledged music videos. Knowing this, the streaming giant is negotiating with various partners to include music videos on its platform, a decision aimed at attracting more Gen Z audiences and pulling them away from YouTube and TikTok.

However, the exact timetable for the availability of music video support on Spotify is unknown, and YouTube Music currently has the advantage in this area.

In addition to this, Spotify is rumored to be planning to introduce lossless audio streaming, aimed at audiophiles seeking high-end sound quality. This new feature is expected to be part of the premium “Supremium” subscription tier, a concept that was previously revealed as “Spotify HiFi” in February 2021 but has yet to be rolled out. This premium plan is expected later this year and will initially target non-US markets.

Recently, Spotify has also made progress in improving the desktop user experience. The platform was revamped, resulting in a more seamless and engaging interface that allows users to explore, curate and organize their music. The redesign included the “My Library” and “Now Playing” interfaces, aligning the desktop experience with the user-friendly interfaces found in Spotify’s mobile apps.
