Beware of Scam! Fraudsters Exploit WhatsApp to Deceive Users with False Promises of Ram Mandir Entry
As Ram Mandir preparations are in full swing, cybercriminals have launched a new campaign to exploit people through WhatsApp messages, offering free VIP entry to the Ayodhya temple on January 22.
The first messages that people received contain an APK (Android Application Package) file labeled as Ram Janmabhoomi Grihsampark Abhiyan.APK. Later, another on-screen message encourages users to “Install Ram Janmabhoomi Grihsampark Abhiyan to get VIP access and share Hindu… Jay Shree Ram…”
What is this invitation?
Needless to say, neither the state nor the central government, the event organizers nor the temple trust set up to deal with the mismanagement of the temple in Ayodhya are involved in this case. This is a new scam that specifically targets people who are eager to witness or enter the temple on the opening day.
Downloading such malicious APK files, which allegedly allow access to the temple on January 22, is a significant threat. The potential harm such files can cause depends on the specific malware hidden inside. Here are some common things that malicious APKs can do:
– Stealing personal information: This includes login information, passwords, credit card numbers, contact information, browsing history, and even personal messages.
– Financial data: APKs can target banking applications and steal financial data such as account numbers, transaction data and even hijack one-time passwords.
– Device location: Tracking your device location allows attackers to track your movements and target you with personalized attacks.
Additionally, such files can help attackers spy on targeted devices. Your phone activity can be secretly recorded, including typing, browsing and even using the camera and microphone. Malware can crash apps, freeze your phone, or even wipe your data completely.
Every keystroke you make can be logged and store sensitive information such as passwords and messages. Similarly, your calls can be intercepted and recorded without your knowledge.
It is recommended to be careful when you come across such APKs distributed through third-party sources. If you receive such messages from an unknown sender, take quick action by reporting and blocking the person and file a cybercrime report immediately. Secondly, do not click on such links and avoid forwarding such messages to your contacts.
