The CEO of OpenAI will testify in the US Senate next week about artificial intelligence
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will testify before a Senate panel next week as the US Congress considers how best to regulate artificial intelligence as the technology becomes more powerful and widespread.
Altman will testify Tuesday before the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology and Law about what laws may be needed to protect Americans as government and businesses begin to use artificial intelligence in everything from medicine to finance to employee surveillance.
It will be Altman’s first testimony to Congress, the panel said in announcing the hearing.
Last week, Altman attended a White House meeting on artificial intelligence to discuss how to secure legislative safeguards.
Asked if the companies agreed on the regulations, Altman told reporters, “We’re surprisingly aligned on what needs to happen.”
Another witness is Christina Montgomery, IBM’s data protection officer.
“AI urgently needs rules and safeguards to live up to its enormous promise and pitfalls,” said Senator Richard Blumenthal, the panel’s chairman. “This hearing kicks off the work of our subcommittee, which oversees and shines a light on the advanced algorithms and powerful technology of artificial intelligence.”
