FBI Alerts Public of Potential AI-Based Data Theft by Cybercriminals
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued a warning about hackers who are exploiting AI chatbots such as ChatGPT to target unsuspecting victims. According to the agency, these hackers are now able to easily generate harmful codes using ChatGPT, enabling them to ensnare victims more quickly than ever before.
Security experts have warned about the implicit use of AI chatbots, which can be used to develop sophisticated cyberattacks, and the FBI’s warning addresses similar concerns. Artificial intelligence has come in the form of Deepfakes over the past year, but the threat of AI chatbots is serious, especially now that technology has found a way to bypass traditional detection channels, at least for the layman.
“We expect over time, as the adoption and democratization of AI models continues, these trends will grow,” says a senior FBI official in the Tom’s Hardware report.
Getting AI into the wrong hands always wreaked havoc on the market, and when you have tools like AI voice generators or AI video editors that let you impersonate humans, fraudsters and scammers have the opportunity to multiply the joy. And real-life examples of AI-centric scams have started to appear in the public eye.
Recently, a person living in Kerala received a call from a person he thought was his friend and ended up sending him Rs 40,000 at the scammer’s request. But it turns out that the scammer used artificial intelligence manipulation software to trick the person into thinking they were someone else. Experts are not fazed by these incidents, and unfortunately such incidents can only get worse from here, and the FBI’s warning is a clear wake-up call to all law enforcement agencies worldwide looking for these high-tech scammers.
