Gmail Offers Client-Side Encryption for Android and iOS Users
Tech giant Google has expanded Gmail client-side encryption to Android and iOS mobile devices worldwide.
With the introduction of Gmail client-side encryption online earlier this year, Android and iOS business users can now read and write encrypted messages directly from their devices.
“This allows users to work with your most sensitive data from any of their mobile devices while meeting compliance and regulatory requirements,” the company said late Friday.
Gmail mobile apps support encrypted mail natively, so users don’t need to download multiple apps or navigate to an external portal to access their encrypted messages.
“While Workspace encrypts data at rest and in transit using secure cryptographic libraries, client-side encryption ensures that you have sole control over encryption keys and access to your data,” the tech giant explained.
Client-side encryption ensures that “sensitive information in the email body and attachments is inaccessible to Google servers,” and you control the encryption keys and identity service to use those keys.
You can add client-side encryption to any message by clicking the lock icon and selecting additional encryption and writing your message and adding attachments as normal.
This feature is available to Google Workspace Enterprise Plus, Education Plus and Education Standard customers.
