Google I/O 2023: How does the new AI search differ from the Bard Chatbot?
Alphabet Inc’s Google on Wednesday introduced an updated core search product that embeds more artificial intelligence into its answers, as the company seeks to dispel suspicions that it is losing ground to Microsoft Corp’s OpenAI-powered Bing search.
Google already has a Bard chatbot that competes with ChatGPT, OpenAI’s chatbot that has created a lot of excitement among users with its human responses.
WHEN DO I GOOGLE AND WHEN BARD?
According to the company, traditional Google search should still be used to search and find information, such as locating what to buy.
Bard is a chatbot with a personality that can have human conversations and is intended for creative collaboration, for example creating software code or writing captions.
WHAT ARE THE GOOGLE SEARCH UPDATES?
With enhanced search, called Search Generative Experience, Google’s home page still looks and functions like the familiar search bar.
The difference is in the answers: if the new Google detects that generative AI can be used to answer a query, the answer generated by the AI will appear at the top of the results page. Traditional links to the Internet fall short.
For example, a search for “weather San Francisco” will lead the user to an eight-day weather forecast as usual, while a query asking what to wear in a California city will prompt a long answer generated by AI, according to a Reuters demo. earlier this week.
“You should bring layers, including a short-sleeved shirt and a light sweater or jacket for the day,” the result stated, including links to websites from which it gleaned such
Users can also enter a completely new “chat mode” that, like Bard and ChatGPT, recalls the user’s previous questions so that users can ask follow-ups more easily.
However, the company points out that the chat mode is not designed to be a chatbot with a personality; it is only intended to refine search results. For example, unlike Bard and ChatGPT, its responses never contain an “I” clause.
CAN YOU TRY THE NEW GOOGLE SEARCH NOW?
Not yet. U.S. consumers will gain access to the Search Generative Experience in the coming weeks through a waitlist, trial phase during which Google will monitor the quality, speed and cost of search results, the company said.
CAN I GET ONE BARD NOW?
The company said Wednesday that Bard is now available without a waiting list in 180 countries and territories, and plans to expand its support to 40 languages.
