Google to Unite AI Chatbot and Virtual Assistant at 2023 Event

Google revealed its intention to incorporate generative artificial intelligence (AI) features into its virtual assistant, enabling it to assist users in tasks such as itinerary planning and email management. A Google executive informed Reuters that this AI advancement would empower the assistant to pose follow-up questions to users.

The Alphabet subsidiary said during its hardware event in New York that it plans to add the generative AI capabilities of its Bard chatbot to a version of Google’s virtual assistant, which aims to provide personalized help with reasoning and creation capabilities on mobile devices.

“(A) whole task is done with a couple of simple questions that you ask your assistant, which we think is a very, very powerful concept,” Sissie Hsiao, Google Assistant and Bard, said in an interview. Reuters.

Google and other tech companies have been racing to build some form of generative AI into new or existing products. Meta Platforms, Amazon.com and Microsoft have all stepped up their efforts this year.

The new version of Google Assistant has access to a cellphone’s camera and microphone, and users can feed images or audio into a large language model to help answer questions, Hsiao said. It doesn’t include revenue-generating features, Hsiao said, because Google is still in the “learning phase” with generative AI.

“We want to learn how to make this a great experience,” Google’s vice president said.

Google said the new software will be available to its trusted testing program “soon,” but did not reveal a general release date. The company plans to release a version for Android and Apple’s mobile operating system iOS.
