India Leads in 5G Subscriber Growth with 1.3 Billion Global Users
Global 5G subscriptions grew by 175 million in the second quarter (Q2), while India’s share of total mobile subscriptions posted the largest net increase during the period with more than seven million new users, a new report showed on Tuesday.
The second quarter additions bring the number of global 5G subscriptions to nearly 1.3 billion, according to the Ericsson Mobility Report.
In the second quarter (Q2), the number of mobile communications subscriptions was 8.3 billion, and the net increase in the quarter increased by 40 million subscriptions.
The number of individual mobile phone subscribers was 6.1 billion.
The most net additions during the quarter came from India (more than 7 million). India was followed by China (five million) and the United States (three million) mobile phone subscribers.
“About 260 communications service providers (CSPs) have launched commercial 5G services. About 35 CSPs have launched standalone 5G networks, the report added.
Global mobile phone subscription density was 105 percent in the second quarter.
The number of mobile broadband subscriptions increased by around 100 million in the quarter and was 7.4 billion, an increase of 5 percent compared to the previous year. Mobile broadband now accounts for 88 percent of all mobile subscriptions.
Mobile data traffic grew by 33 percent in the second quarter of 2022 and the second quarter of 2023. 4G subscriptions increased by 11 million and totaled approximately 5.2 billion, representing 62 percent of all mobile communications subscriptions.
