ISRO Prepares for Return to Mars with Mangalyaan-2 Mission After 9 Years

Following the successful Chandrayaan-3 mission to the Moon and the ongoing Aditya-L1 mission, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is once again preparing for a new mission. Back in 2014, ISRO achieved its first Mars mission, and now, after a span of 9 years, it is gearing up for the Mangalyaan-2 mission with even more ambitious goals and strategies. While the primary objective of the Mangalyaan-1 mission was to enter the Mars orbit, the upcoming second mission aims to uncover even more discoveries. To learn more about the ISRO Mangalyaan-2 mission, read on.

Mangalyaan-2 mission

ISRO’s second Mars mission is called Mars Orbiter Mission-2 (MOM-2), also known as Mangalyaan-2. According to a report by the Physical Research Laboratory, the spacecraft will be equipped with four payloads that will study the red planet’s atmosphere, environment and interplanetary dust. The four payloads include the Mars Orbit Dust Experiment (MODEX), the Radio Occultation (RO) experiment, the Energetic Ion Spectrometer (EIS), and the Langmuir Probe and Electric Field Experiment (LPEX).

The payload of the MODEX Mangalyaan-2 mission is designed to unravel the mysteries of the high regions of Mars in terms of their abundance, distribution and material mobility. The RO instruments measure electron density profiles and the atmosphere on Mars. The goal of EIS, which is now under development, is to study solar energy particles and superheated solar wind particles. To gain more detailed information about the plasma environment on Mars, the LPEX instrument is used to study electron number density, electron temperature, and electric field waves. The device also consists of a Langmuir probe (LP) and two electric field (EF) probes for efficient investigation.

If the speculations and claims are true, the Mangalyaan-2 mission will be another major project for the Indian space agency. India is also planning another space exploration mission to Venus, called Shukrayaan, as revealed by ISRO Director S.Somanath. ISRO has listed its most important tasks for the coming years, bringing joy to Indians with its wonderful plans.
