Gmail Introduces Emoji Reactions for Self-Expression

Gmail users may soon have the option to respond to emails using emojis directly within the platform, according to reports. This development by Google aims to provide a quicker and more expressive way for users to convey their feelings and reactions without having to type out a full response.

While this feature isn’t available to everyone yet, Android users can get a glimpse of it in action. Emoji reactions are quietly integrated into the Gmail app, and you can enable and use them with a little tweaking. @AssembleDebug’s blog post sheds light on this feature, which is already partially operational.

Emojis at your fingertips

In this new setting, the emoji reaction button appears in emails right next to the traditional reply button. To begin with, it offers you a selection of popular emoticons such as hearts, party hats, thumbs up, laughter, praying hands and emoticons. However, there is also a handy “+” button at the end, which allows you to react to the email from a wide selection of emoticons. Once you’ve selected an emoji, it will appear at the bottom of the email.

Plus, you’re not limited to just one reaction in an email. Multiple reactions can be added to a single email, although there appear to be 50 unique reactions.

For the recipient, especially if they don’t use Gmail with emoji reactions, your reaction will appear as a separate email with a visible emoji. However, Gmail users are designed to see the reaction as an integral part of the original email rather than a separate response.

Basically, when you react to an email in Gmail, other Gmail users will see your reaction with the original message, while non-Gmail recipients will see it as a reply email.

While Google hasn’t specified an exact release date for this feature, the fact that it’s already working behind the scenes in the Android app suggests that Gmail’s emoji reactions are on the horizon and will likely come sooner rather than later. Get ready to express yourself with emoticons in your Gmail conversations.
