Meta shares its plans for AR and VR glasses over the next four years
Metalla has ambitious plans for its augmented reality and virtual reality devices in the next few years. Meta puts all its eggs in the Metaverse basket (the name of the parent company clearly shows that) and Mark Zuckerberg believes that AR glasses will become as widely used as mobile phones. Meta will have its first AR glasses on the market by 2027.
Over the next four years, Meta plans to acquire not one, not two, but four different devices to build its software for this revolution. New updates from the company say that it will introduce its first smart glasses in 2025, as well as a smartwatch with a neural interface.
Meta employees have been told about these plans in this week’s presentation, as quoted by The Verge. It’s surprising to hear these plans, especially after Meta faced global layoffs and budget cuts to delay various projects related to the Meta hardware division.
Apart from AR, Metalla also has immediate plans for its Quest range when the Quest 3 headset is launched later this year, which is likely to cost more than $400 (roughly Rs. 32,000) because it’s powerful but twice as thin. Meta hopes that the hardware focus and its Metaverse ecosystem will help the company build a service that also serves businesses and consumers.
Augmented reality isn’t just part of Meta’s goal; you also have brands like Google, Apple and some others like Xiaomi and Oppo. It all depends on the complete package that Meta faces from Apple, which is rumored to bring the realityOS ecosystem to WWDC 2023 later this year.
But in addition to headphones, the development related to smartwatches is also interesting. The company has repeatedly tried to make a wearable product that meets its goals, but Meta has either postponed the project or squashed it completely.
Meta realizes the user’s privacy concerns hanging over its head, without forgetting the ethics of these products. But the plans Meta shared this week suggest that the company has a full-fledged roadmap, now it remains to be seen whether the products will come to market or not.
