Samsung Introduces 4TB Model of 990 Pro SSDs with High Speeds
Samsung has introduced a 4TB variant of its 990 Pro NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSDs, designed specifically for gamers and content creators. The company asserts that this latest model offers the highest random read performance compared to other consumer SSDs with a PCIe 4.0 interface. Additionally, Samsung claims that the new SSD provides faster read/write speeds, enhanced power efficiency, and an extended lifespan.
According to Samsung, the 4TB SSD 990 Pro is available with or without a heatsink and has a slim design that fits inside an ultra-slim laptop or gaming console. Thanks to the company’s V-NAND chips, PCIe 4.0 interface and improved controller, it can achieve read speeds of up to 7,450 MB/s and write speeds of 6,900 MB/s – best in class and equal to its 1TB and 2TB versions.
Random speeds are also identical to the smaller versions at 1,600K and 1,550,000 IOPS read/write speeds. However, endurance doubles from 1,200 TBW (terabytes written) to 2,400 TBW compared to the 2 TB version thanks to the increased capacity. It also has double the cache, 4GB.
While not as fast as the latest PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSDs (which can reach 11,700MB/s read and 9,500MB/s write), the 990 Pro is one of the fastest PCIe 4.0 models. It’s also 50 percent more efficient than the previous 980 Pro, Samsung said. This makes it ideal not only for PC expansion, but also for consoles like Sony’s PlayStation 5 – and 4TB would be pretty sweet on the PS5, given the ever-growing size of AAA games.
The 990 Pro 4TB will go on sale for $345/$355 for standard and heatsink versions starting in October on Samsung.com and “select retailers.” That’s more than double the price of the 2TB version, which is normally $190 but is currently marked down to $135 on Amazon. However, when it starts hitting stores in force, we should see discounts on the 4TB model as well.
