Sony wants to make a new PlayStation handheld: Report
Sony has been the market leader in PlayStation gaming consoles for years, and the company also has a handheld device that keeps the market ticking over. Now it seems that the Japanese brand wants to add another portable device with some cuts in features that could make it cheaper and attractive to many gamers.
Sony is said to be developing a Lite model of the PlayStation Q handheld, which could have an 8-inch screen, but the console will only work if you’re connected to the Internet and get games through Sony’s Remote Play network.
According to the report, the Lite device must be connected to the Internet to stream PS5 games. This basically means that Sony is unlikely to connect the device to its cloud network, allowing you to enjoy PS5 games seamlessly.
We can’t even say if the Lite version will let you run games from other cloud networks. Based on these details, the PlayStation Q Lite sounds like an identical product to the Nintendo Wii U GamePad, which also connects via WiFi and only lets you play games if you’re on the same network as the main console.
The report suggests that Sony could release the handheld after the removable disc version of the PS5 is released later this year, and before the PS5 Pro is released, which many expect to happen late next year. As for the PS Q Lite, it will likely have adaptive triggers, speakers, volume buttons and even a headphone jack.
The display is expected to offer 1080p resolution at 60 fps. Sony could face a tough battle with Nintendo and Asus, which is also positioning its first handheld as part of the popular ROG lineup called ROG Ally. The company has shared teasers of the product running on the Windows 11 operating system.
