Upcoming WhatsApp update to introduce new ‘private mention’ feature for status updates – Learn more

WhatsApp is said to be testing a new feature that will enable users to privately mention contacts in their status updates, with the goal of improving user experience and promoting more personalized interactions on the platform.

Feature under development

According to a report by WABetaInfo, the new feature will allow users to tag certain contacts directly in their status updates. When tagged contacts are mentioned, they will receive special notifications ensuring quick awareness of the update. Importantly, this feature preserves users’ privacy as mentions are only visible to the mentioned contacts and not to other status update viewers. In addition, muting the status update prevents users from receiving notifications about the muted contact’s mentions.

Feature Meaning

The ability to mention contacts privately in status updates is expected to significantly increase user engagement on the platform. This feature promotes more meaningful interactions by allowing users to engage specific contacts directly in their shared moments or updates. In particular, it ensures that important updates immediately catch the attention of said contacts when they receive notifications directly.

WhatsApp recent activity

WhatsApp is looking to introduce new features as it seeks to combat abuse of the platform and comply with government regulations. In February, the messaging app announced its measures against account abuse in India. It said it had suspended a total of 7,628,000 WhatsApp accounts between February 1 and 29. Of these, 1,424,000 accounts were proactively banned, indicating proactive measures to combat abuse prior to user notifications. These actions are in line with IT Rules 2021, demonstrating WhatsApp’s commitment to maintaining a secure platform environment.

The upcoming feature, which will enable private mentions in status updates, reflects WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to improve user interaction and engagement. By providing users with more tools for personal communication, the platform aims to enrich the overall user experience. In addition, WhatsApp’s proactive measures to prevent account abuse underscore its commitment to promoting a safe and responsible digital environment for its users.
