WhatsApp Introduces Security Measure To Shield IP Addresses During Calls
WhatsApp update: The popular Meta-owned instant messaging app WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new privacy feature that protects the IP address of calls in order to bring more privacy to its platform.
According to a report by WABetaInfo, which follows WhatsApp, the meta-owned app wants to introduce new features to calls to offer better privacy and security.
“After installing the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.18.15 update from the Google Play Store, we noticed that the app is developing a privacy call forwarding feature, and it will be available in a future update of the app,” the release said.
According to a screenshot shared by WABetaInfo, the instant messaging app has plans to add a new feature directly to the privacy call settings screen. This new option works like a call privacy relay feature, making it difficult for call participants to safely infer your location through WhatsApp servers.
However, as WhatsApp servers securely relay your connection during a call, call quality may be slightly affected when this privacy option is enabled.
“This trade-off between enhanced privacy and a possible slight degradation in call quality is due to the encryption and routing processes through the WhatsApp servers involved in the privacy relay feature,” the report said.
It suggested that the platform aims to provide its users with an extra layer of protection against potential attempts to track their physical location based on call data by implementing this feature.
As a result, users can try more secure calls through the privacy feature, which ensures that their location information is effectively protected.
This enhanced protection makes it significantly more difficult for anyone to deduce your exact location when it is published. The IP address protection feature for calls is under development and will be available in a future update of the app.
