WhatsApp launches Stay Safe campaign in India to educate users about online safety
The popular instant messaging app WhatsApp, owned by Meta, has launched a new user safety campaign that gives users the opportunity to manage their online security and ensure a safer communication experience.
The campaign focuses on educating users about WhatsApp’s built-in product features and security tools that equip people with the necessary safeguards to help protect them from online scams, fraud and account-compromising threats.
The three-month long campaign showcases simple yet effective ways to implement WhatsApp security features that together provide protection for users as they spend more and more time online in their daily lives.
The campaign also focuses on the importance of protecting your WhatsApp account so that you stay safe and secure at all times.
“User safety is at the core of everything we do at WhatsApp, which is why we are launching our security campaign ‘Stay Safe with WhatsApp’ to raise user awareness about WhastApp’s security tools and product features that can help keep users safe from online scams and fraud,” Shivnath Thukral, Director, Public Policy India, Meta , said.
The main security features of the WhatsApp campaign are:
WhatsApp allows users to add an extra layer of security to their account by enabling two-step verification, which requires a six-digit PIN code when resetting and verifying a WhatsApp account. This is helpful if the SIM card is stolen or if the phone is compromised.
The Meta-owned instant messaging app offers users a simple way to “block and report” an account to WhatsApp. Blocked contacts or numbers can no longer call you or send you messages.
Users can manage their personal information like – Profile picture, Last seen, Online status, About, Status and who can see it – all, contacts only, selected contacts or nobody. You can also control your online presence by choosing who can and can’t see when you’re online when you want to keep your online presence private.
Users can also decide who can add them to WhatsApp groups, which increases their privacy and prevents people from adding them to groups they don’t want to be a part of. Users can also leave the group without notifying anyone.
