Say Goodbye to Unlimited Storage: Find Out Why WhatsApp and Google Are Cutting Back
In bad news for WhatsApp users, the Meta-owned instant messaging app and Google will no longer offer unlimited storage quota for WhatsApp backups in the future.
“With the latest WhatsApp Business beta for Android 2.23.24.21 update available on the Google Play Store, we discovered that WhatsApp and Google are indeed planning to stop offering unlimited storage quota for WhatsApp backups in the near future,” WABetaInfo reported.
This means that soon, WhatsApp backup on Android will work the same way as iOS, and users will also be able to use 15GB of free storage without any charges.
According to a recent official announcement by Google, the unlimited storage quota for WhatsApp backups will be discontinued and WhatsApp has introduced in-app alerts to notify users in advance. a similar notice was also posted on the official WhatsApp Help Center clarifying the imminent change and its impact on Android users.
However, it’s important to note that users can continue to back up their data at no additional cost as long as they have free storage space within the 15GB of free cloud storage included with their Google Account or any additional storage space, such as through Google One.
If users reach their storage limit, they must create space by deleting unnecessary chats or media, or opt for more storage through the Google One plan. Currently, the cheapest plan is the Basic plan, which offers 100 GB for $1.99 per month.
The US search giant has also clarified that the storage restrictions do not currently affect users who have a Workspace subscription through work or school.
Ending unlimited storage for WhatsApp backups on Android will surely affect users who have become accustomed to automatic and unlimited data backup over the years. The change is expected to be felt especially by those who rely heavily on multimedia communication, resulting in larger backup file sizes.
