WhatsApp is developing a new tool for sending data: All data
Meta-owned instant messaging app WhatsApp has reportedly been working on a new one-to-many tool called “Channels” for sending information. With the Channels feature, users can easily get useful updates from people they want to get news from. The feature is currently under development and will be available in a future update of the app.
“Thanks to the 23.8.0.75 update of the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS available on TestFlight, we discovered that WhatsApp is also working on bringing this feature to the iOS app in the future,” WABetaInfo, a website that follows WhatsApp, reported.
According to screenshots shared by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp plans to rename the Status tab as “Updates” as channels will also be listed in this section of the app. The WhatsApp channel is a private tool where phone numbers and user data connected to the channel always remain hidden.
However, messages received within a channel are not end-to-end encrypted, as the one-to-many concept would not make much sense for channels. It is important to note that channels do not affect the end-to-end encryption of private communications, which is still end-to-end encryption.
Because this is an optional extension for private messages and not connected to a public social network, people can always control which channels they want to subscribe to, and no one else can see who they follow, regardless of whether they’ve added them as contacts or not, the report said.
Also, people can’t automatically subscribe to channels because they don’t have algorithmic recommendations or social graphs that feed users content they didn’t want to see.
According to the report, the channels also support handles, so users can search for a specific WhatsApp channel by entering its username into WhatsApp.
This feature is designed to improve the accessibility of channels, making it easier for users to get the updates they want. Channels are currently under development and will be released in a future WhatsApp update.
