iOS 17.4 introduces major updates such as redesigned App Store guidelines and enhanced NFC capabilities
Apple has released the much-awaited iOS 17.4 update, which includes major changes designed for users in Europe. While the update does have some improvements for users worldwide, the main focus is on meeting the requirements of the Digital Markets Act and introducing specific changes for the European Union.
EU changes
In accordance with the Act on Digital Markets, Apple is renewing the App Store environment in the European Union (EU). Developers in the EU can now choose alternative app stores or distribute their apps through alternative channels, introducing a new payment structure. In this system, developers are charged a standard fee of €0.50 per user per year, and the first million installs are free. Apps from alternative stores are not charged a commission, while App Store apps have a reduced commission rate of 17 percent, reported MacRumors.
EU users get the freedom to set their preferred alternative app store as the default store, which offers new flexibility in app acquisition. Enhanced security measures have also been integrated, such as pop-up warnings for malware-infected apps acquired from alternative stores.
Alternative payment methods
Apple has freed up payment methods in apps, allowing developers to use alternative payment systems without requiring in-app purchases. Consequently, developers who use alternative payment solutions receive a three percent discount on their App Store payments. There is also no fixed fee of EUR 0.50 per user for applications shared via alternative platforms that use alternative payment methods.
Third-party browser updates
In response to user demand, EU users are now free to choose their default browser from popular options when launching Safari. In addition, alternative browser engines are allowed, which ensures the versatility of browser choices.
NFC access (ETA)
The iOS 17.4 update extends NFC access to third-party payment apps and banks in the European Economic Area (EEA). This facilitates direct contactless payments via iPhone, regardless of Apple Pay or the Wallet application.
Web Applications (EU)
Apple’s original restrictions on Progressive Web Apps (PWA) in the EU have been lifted based on user feedback. Home screen web apps are now functional, although they require WebKit support to function.
Game Application Changes (Global)
Game application policies have been relaxed globally, allowing streaming game services such as Xbox Cloud Gaming and Nvidia GeForce NOW to be offered as standalone applications. In addition, mini-games, chatbots and plugins can now take advantage of in-app purchases.
New Emoji
iOS 17.4 introduces a series of new emoji characters, including lime, phoenix, and various human and body emoticons, enhancing users’ options for expression and communication.
Messages with Siri
The Messaging with Siri feature is revamped, offering language-specific options for reading incoming messages and enriching user interactions.
Podcasts and music
Improvements to the Podcast and Music apps streamline navigation and functionality with new features like transcriptions and real-time music recognition that enrich the user experience.
Together, these updates improve the iOS ecosystem by providing users in Europe and beyond with a more dynamic and personalized user experience. However, it also reflects Apple’s commitment to regulatory compliance and user satisfaction worldwide.
