Tesla’s iPhone App Now Allows Control of Vehicle Through Siri
The latest version of Tesla’s iOS software now allows for easier control of your Tesla vehicle using your iPhone. With the integration of Shortcuts actions, common tasks can now be performed through Siri, in addition to on-screen taps and widgets. This means that you can use Apple’s voice assistant to perform simple tasks like opening trunks or windows, as well as accessing special modes such as Bioweapon Defense Mode. So, if you’ve ever wished to activate this mode by simply talking to your phone, now you can.
Hotkeys also enable automation, so you can combine multiple tasks or complete them according to set schedules. For example, you can create a panic mode that flashes the lights, sounds the horn and closes the windows at the same time, or automatically heats the cabin before your morning journey.
The available commands are not comprehensive and contain features you probably won’t use – you really don’t need a shortcut for an emissions test. This could still be significantly more convenient than wading through the Tesla app. It’s also worth noting that there’s no official integration with Alexa or Google Assistant as of this writing, so Android users will have to do more work for hands-free use.
This app update does not give Tesla cars a built-in voice control system. You have to turn to cars like Mercedes or Volvo if you want to speak directly to your vehicle. It does bring sound into the equation, though, and that can be appreciated if you don’t want to wade through the official app to deal with common functions.
