Threads Reaches 100 Million Milestone, Becoming Fastest Growing Platform Ever and Outpacing Twitter-Competitor ChatGPT
The initial excitement has now turned into reality. Threads, the new app from Meta Platforms that was hailed as a potential rival to Twitter, has not only thrived but has surpassed all previous records set by any platform. Despite having a strong user base from Instagram (with over 2 billion users), the astonishing numbers it has achieved in such a short period of time can only be described as extraordinary.
So, what’s all the hullabaloo about? Clearly shocked and honored, the Instagram CEO took to his Insta account to say: “100 million people signed up for Threads in 5 days. I’m not sure I can wrap my mind around that fact. It’s insane. It makes no sense to me.”
However, he was quick to give credit to his team, adding that “The team has busted their ass, but we know it’s a race to the starting line. They’re saying, ‘Make it work, make it great, let it grow. “Well, we sure did things out of order, but I promise we’ll make this great.”
Big win for Zuck
It should be mentioned that as the big success of Meta Platforms led by the often successful Mark Zuckerberg, Threads has been a much needed success. It’s also important because it has beaten another recent success, the AI darling of the masses, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, as the fastest growing online platform to reach this point.
Clearly pleased, Zuckerberg himself told Threads: “It’s mostly organic demand, and we haven’t even launched many offers yet.” The message clearly threw down the challenge before Musk and showed that there is much more to come.
Who Scripted Threads Win?
Twitter-weary celebrities to regular people outraged by Twitter’s chaos have flocked to sign up for Threads, enabling the app to set a new record for user growth. It was launched last Wednesday. And with that mark, it’s certainly worthy of its Twitter killer.
Food for thought for Musk
Elon Musk has to take care of that. So far, he had no competitor in sight and could order things on Twitter as he pleased. But suddenly, in his rearview mirror, there’s only a massive Threads presence that wants to zoom past.
According to a Sprout Social report published in March 2023, Twitter has approximately 556 million monthly active users worldwide.
According to a tweet from Musk himself in November 2022, Twitter had about 260 million monetizable daily active users.
Who all did Threads beat?
Threads reached 100 million users faster than ChatGPT, which had become the fastest-growing app in history in January just two months after its launch, UBS research revealed.
Another big sensation, China’s TikTok had taken about 9 months to reach this figure.
What about Threads’ older Instagram? On the platform, it took not 2 months, but 2 years to reach this mark.
Business of Apps says it took Google+ 1.2 years to reach this milestone.
