Meta unveils new WhatsApp login process for secondary devices

Meta Platforms’ messaging platform, WhatsApp, is currently experimenting with a different approach to setting up secondary devices. Although the desktop app has made it easier to communicate with loved ones on your computer, WhatsApp’s multi-device support has also seen enhancements, enabling users to utilize the same account on two phones. However, the existing process of linking the primary WhatsApp account to another device requires scanning a QR code. To overcome potential constraints, WhatsApp is working on a new login method that will involve sending an eight-digit verification code to the user’s phone.

QR code scanning limitations

While scanning a QR code is usually a simple process, there are situations where it may not be possible. For example, if a user’s primary phone camera isn’t working, they wouldn’t be able to set up WhatsApp on any other device without an alternate sign-in option.

Introducing the “Link instead of phone number” option

To account for such scenarios, WhatsApp is actively working to implement the “Link instead of phone number” feature. When users choose this new sign-in method, they will be asked to enter their country code and mobile phone number. WhatsApp then generates and sends an eight-digit code to the user’s primary phone. Currently, the “Link to Phone Number” option is available exclusively on WhatsApp Web. However, based on the new information, it is likely that Meta will soon extend this feature to secondary devices as well.

According to a report by WABetaInfo, the latest WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.23.14.18 includes this alternative login option when linking the new WhatsApp desktop.

WhatsApp’s multi-device functionality has expanded significantly in recent years. Therefore, the introduction of an alternative login method that eliminates QR code scanning should be welcomed by users. However, it is important to note that even with the latest beta version, the “Link instead of phone number” option may not be visible to all users. This is due to the WhatsApp server-side push required to enable the feature. In the coming days and weeks, Meta is expected to expand the availability of this feature to a wider group of beta testers. When exactly the public will get it is not yet clear.
