Meta to test AI-powered advertising tools for content creation: what it means
Social media giant Meta Platforms Inc joined the generative artificial intelligence product race on Thursday, saying it will begin testing artificial intelligence-based advertising tools that can create content such as image backgrounds and variations of written text.
A select group of advertisers will be invited to try out the tools in a “testing playground,” which the company calls an AI sandbox, Meta executives said at a news conference in New York.
Administrators decline to specify how many advertisers will have access to the space at the outset, saying only that the group was small.
They said Meta planned to grant access to more advertisers in July and integrate some features into mainstream advertising products later this year.
The announcement marks the first step by the Facebook and Instagram owner to roll out products that use generative artificial intelligence technology that mines vast stores of past data to create new content such as prose, art and software code.
Interest and investments have revolved around the technology since Microsoft-backed startup OpenAI released the chatbot ChatGPT in the fall.
Meta’s announcement comes a day after its biggest digital ad rival, Alphabet’s Google, said it would begin offering integrations of the technology into its search, email and photo products.
