Google updates its content and AI policy in preparation for the 2024 General Elections in India.

Google on Tuesday announced new measures to support India’s general elections, claiming it will provide voters with high-quality information, protect its platforms from abuse and help people navigate content generated by artificial intelligence.

Ahead of the election, the company is partnering with the Election Commission of India (ECI) to make it easy for people to find important voting information on Google search — such as how to register and vote — in both English and Hindi.

Google requires all advertisers who want to run election ads on our platforms to go through an identity verification process, provide a pre-certification issued by the ECI or someone authorized by the Inquiry Panel for each election ad they want to run, if applicable, and information about the ad that clearly shows who paid for the ad.

“Additionally, we have long-standing advertising policies that prohibit ads from promoting provably false claims that could undermine trust or voter turnout,” the company said.

The company has also started introducing restrictions on election-related surveys that Gemini AI returns answers to.

In addition, every image created through Google products is embedded with a watermark using Google DeepMind’s “SynthID,” the company said.

YouTube will soon begin requiring content creators to disclose when they’ve created realistically altered or synthetic content, and will display a sticker telling people when they’re watching that content.

In addition, “we have information panels that show funding sources from publishers who receive public or government funding, and information panels that provide current context for topics prone to misinformation.”

Google said it monitors policies and uses artificial intelligence models to combat large-scale abuse.

“We use a combination of human reviewers and machine learning to identify and remove content that violates our policies. Our AI models enhance our efforts to combat abuse, while a dedicated team of local experts in all major Indian languages work 24×7 to provide relevant context,” the company said.
