Sundar Pichai’s Comments on Apple’s Vision Pro Virtual Reality Headset

The recent unveiling of Apple’s Vision Pro headset has garnered favorable responses, and Google CEO Sundar Pichai has expressed his enthusiasm for the emerging mixed reality product category. Although Pichai has yet to try the Vision Pro headset, he has expressed excitement about the technology that drives similar headsets.

He believes immersive computing experiences will become a key part of the industry in the future, moving away from the traditional black rectangles that could be his way of looking at smartphones. “Google has always felt computing evolves beyond black rectangles,” Pichai told Bloomberg this week.

The strong confidence that Apple has received from one of its competitors shows that everyone has been looking forward to what the iPhone maker has to offer in this space. Not all companies have given positive feedback, especially Mark Zuckerberg from Meta, who claims that Apple and his company see this space very differently.

He may have a point, as the Meta Quest earphones don’t cost more than $600 (roughly Rs. 48,000), while Apple’s first generation earphones are priced at a whopping $3,500 (roughly Rs. 2.8 lakh) and cater to a niche segment.

Google has had a mixed experience with its wearables, especially Google Glass, which never made it out of the developer stage. It’s likely that Google is watching what Apple does with its line of XR headphones and plans to use its plan to develop a more mass-friendly product in the coming years.

Apple is keeping the Vision Pro limited in certain markets, and the product will be available early next year unless things go according to plan and the company doesn’t have enough armory to get people to splurge on the device.
