18-Year-Old From UP Becomes Deaf After Using In-Ear Wireless Earbuds

Headphones, whether wired or wireless, have become an important part of our lives for enjoying music, podcasts and more. Many people today spend a large part of the day with headphones in their ears. However, long-term use of headphones can damage your hearing and – in some cases – may require surgical intervention.

According to a report in The Times of India, a team of doctors in Delhi has successfully restored the hearing of an 18-year-old boy from Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. The boy suffered from hearing damage caused by excessive and long-term use of headphones. Thanks to the surgery, he returned to normal hearing.

The report highlights that the number of similar injuries caused by long-term use of headphones has recently increased – especially among teenagers.

When users wear headphones for long periods of time, the humidity in the ear canal rises, creating a breeding ground for bacteria and viruses. “Like our body, the ear canal also requires ventilation and prolonged closure leads to sweat accumulation and subsequent infections,” the doctors explained as quoted by TOI.

You can prevent ear infections caused by wired and wireless headphones by taking several precautions:

  1. Never share your headphones with other people – whether friends or family – as this can spread and worsen the infection.
  2. Take breaks between using headphones or earphones. If you wear them at work – keep the volume low to avoid long-term hearing loss. It is also important to define common usage.
  3. Clean the ear canal regularly, practice proper hygiene and most importantly, headphones to prevent the growth of bacteria and viruses.
